Connotative- an idea or feeling that a word invokes or suggests
Denotative – the literal meaning of a word
Conflict – the opposition of persons or forces that brings about dramatic action central to the plot of the story
Suspense – the sustained interest created by the buildup of events and the delayed resolution of the plot’s conflict
Drawing conclusions – using information that is implied or inferred within the writing

Dialogue – conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play, or movie
Purpose – the intended goal of a piece of writing, the reason a person writes
Epic – a long poem narrating adventures of heroes or legendary figures, typically derived from ancient oral tradition
Audience – the intended target group for a message, regardless of the medium
Resolution – the action of solving a problem, dispute, or contentious matter
September 24 – September 28
Tone – general character or attitude of piece of writing. Associated with emotions.
Imagery – visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work
Figurative Language – Literary techniques are used to heighten interest, appeal to an audience, and effectively communicate a message.
Metaphor – a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.
Symbolism - symbolic meaning attributed to natural objects or facts.
October 8 – October 12
Diction – the choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing.
Mood – created by the setting and environment
Irony – the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
Paradox – absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true.
Theme - a topic that shows up often in literature or discussion. Usually accepted as a universal truth. (Love is complicated.
