Good afternoon Band,

Congratulations everyone on making it to the end of this challenging year! Congratulations Seniors on your journey through Santa Fe! Congratulations parents on your time spent as interim teachers! I would like to thank all of the band family members of the "Pride of the Tribe" for accepting me as your leader for the past five years. We have worked hard to serve as many different elements of the school and district as possible and so many of you were eager to make that service happen.

While my time at the school may be ending, many of you still have a commitment to fulfill. Keep serving. Keep practicing. Keep challenging yourselves. And keep working to make the "Pride of the Tribe" an excellent organization (and where possible, keep trying to use good grammar). Stand tall when you're in uniform and represent us well.

To paraphrase JK Rowling, "there will come a time when you have to choose between what is right and what is easy," and I sincerely hope you always choose what is right no matter the consequences. Those are the choices that define who you are and ultimately define the community around you.

I love each of you and I love this band. Farewell everyone.

Matthew J. Seifert

Good morning Band,

We've been granted permission to enter the band hall on Thursday May 21 to collect our personal equipment. To move the day fluidly, we are going to use an alphabetical system to get everyone in and out. There will also be two lines at the back door: one for Band and one for Belles. Please enter at the back band hall door where we should have six-foot spacers on the ground to make the lines. Also, please do everything you can to be ready to enter and exit the building in five minutes or less. If you've forgotten your locker combination, please try to let me know in advance to help you out. This really looks like our last opportunity to get to our equipment for a long time, so please do your best to meet this schedule.

9:00-9:30 BAB to CAG

9:30-10:00 CAR to ENG

10:00-10:30 ESP-GUI

10:30-11:00 HAR to JON

11:00-11:30 KRA to MCC

(lunch)

12:00-12:30 MCE to PER

12:30-1:00 PUL to STO

1:00-1:30 THO to ZWI

Finally, Sunday May 17 11:59pm is the deadline for leadership and drum major applications. Very few have been submitted, so I strongly recommend submitting your name for consideration. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Thanks,

Matt

Friday May 8, 2020

Good afternoon Band,

There's a lot going on before the end of the school year, so please try to keep up. We've gotten word that some form of graduation will take place at the stadium, but very little else has come along. I'll keep you posted the best I can.

Leadership Announcement

I am now accepting leadership applications for the 2020 Marching Season. The application attached below needs to be completely filled out and submitted by 11:59pm Sunday May 17th. Anyone interested in a leadership position must fill out one of these forms to be considered eligible.

Students seeking the position of Drum Major must submit two videos via emailed to me and Mr. Kinser at peter.kinser@sfisd.org.

Video #1: Please film yourself conducting the music excerpt from music handed out shortly before Spring Break. I will be evaluating to make sure we can clearly see your whole pattern and facial expressions.

Video #2: Please answer the following two questions: 1) Formally introduce yourself and share why should you be the next drum major for Santa Fe High School Band? and 2) What elements will you bring to best motivate the band next year? Please know that I plan to send those videos to outside judges along with your application forms.

We plan to announce the leadership positions on May 29th along with the release of the senior video, the slide show, scholarship winners, and the piece of music you commissioned to commemorate May 18th. Mr. Owens submitted it last week and it’s beautiful.

Scholarship Applications

Seniors, the scholarship application is connected by a link below. Please submit the application to me (Mr. Seifert) for verification. I will then forward it to the Band Booster Executive Board for consideration.

 Senior Photos and Band Photos

We need photos for the slide show! We would like seniors to send both "baby" photos and grad photos.  We would like everyone to send band photos from the year as well. The more the merrier. You can photos directly to Mrs. McCollum at monica.mccollum@sfisd.net or post them to the band's Facebook page.

Letterman List

If you believe you're eligible for a letterman at the end of this year, please let me know. While I have several names already, I'd like to make sure we get as many of the correct names to the athletic director's secretary as possible.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Thanks,

Matt

Sunday April 26, 2020

Good afternoon Band,

Here are the announcements for this coming week:

CONCERT ATTIRE REFUNDS

Cousin's Concert Attire never began to process our sizes for an order, so we have canceled the order for this year. Band Boosters will be mailing refund checks to the families that ordered concert attire for the spring.

STATE SOLO & ENSEMBLE PATCHES

UIL is allowing those who earned a spot at State Solo & Ensemble a chance to buy the patch for your letter jackets. They are $6.00 each and you can get them through the following website:

Link to Southwest EmblemLinks to an external site.

SENIOR HONOR CORDS

The school is assembling all honor cords for seniors and will have them at the front desk soon. This includes Band. Please keep a look out for the announcement from the school.

GRADUATION BAND

The band is on schedule to musically support the graduation during summer. We are not tasked with supporting the virtual graduation in May. "Pomp and Circumstance" will be worked into your playoff objectives for the last portion of the school year so you're ready to play it when called. Seniors will be exempt from these playoffs.

PASS/FAIL

Several students are having difficulty meeting the pass/fail requirements of some of our objectives. Since direct instruction is challenging at this time, I plan to change the grading system from pass/fail to a division-style evaluation. In short, if the playoff earns a Division 1, it will get a 100%. If it earns a Division 2, it will get an 85%. Division 3 will be at 70, then 55, then 40. I should be able to review all attempts in the system early in the week to update the entire gradebook.

Thanks to everyone who's been communicating back with me. We're working hard to keep everything up to date and keep you ready for the end of the year.

Matt

P.S. I'm fully aware I didn't mention anything about leadership applications, drumline auditions or guard auditions. Our plan has to work in a similar fashion as Cheer and Dance and I'm consulting with them right now.

Tuesday April 14, 2020

Good afternoon Band,

It is time to let all of you know that I have resigned from the position of Head Band Director at Santa Fe and will not be returning next year. I've truly enjoyed my time with you and wish you nothing but the best for the future. I plan to work through the end of this school year and prepare the band in the same manner as normal.

GRADES

We've had issues with grades getting posted correctly and are working on it. In short, Canvas and Skyward aren't syncing the way they're supposed to, particularly on the assignments from the beginning of Progress Report 7. Keep letting me know when grades don't line up and I'll keep sweeping through all the classes every day.

STATE REGISTRATION

UIL has backed up the registration start date for State Solo and Ensemble again. The new registration start is April 20th. This information is also true for choir.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Thanks,

Matt

Sunday March 29, 2020

Good afternoon Band,

So many of you seem to be adapting well to our unique situation and quite a number of you have been straight forward about your needs during the past week. Thank you so much and keep it coming. We'll keep trying to support you the best we can.

ASSIGNMENTS

Grades for this past week should all be updated by the end of Monday (tomorrow). That way you can know for certain that everything has been taken care of by Tuesday. If you're using FlipGrid, you should be getting response emails from me after I've reviewed your work.

The high school is looking to coordinate class times and teacher support through office hours. I will be available to help the following class periods at the following times, just email to make an appointment:

3rd Period - Wed 9:00-9:30, Thur 2:00-2:30

4th Period - Wed 10:00-10:30, Fri 9:00-9:30

5th Period - Wed 1:00-1:30, Fri 10:00-10:30

6th Period - Wed 2:00-2:30, Fri 1:00-1:30

7th Period - Thur 9:--9:30, Fri 2:00-2:30

Thanks again for adapting with us and I hope we get through this soon,

Matt

Good morning Band,

The band hall will be open tomorrow for you to pick up instruments, music and equipment. The process for doing so is as follows:

1) Set up an appointment with me for a 15-minute time slot starting at 8:00

2) Show up at the back band hall door at your appointed time

3) Tell me what you need and I'll retrieve it from the band hall for you

We are not allowing anyone into the building. The time slots are important so as to keep distance between everyone who's visiting. (Yes, I have plenty of Lysol wipes to make this happen).

Please email me to set up a time and I'll see some of you soon.

Thanks,

Matt

Sunday March 15, 2020

Good evening Band,

One of my biggest responsibilities is to make sure band schedules work as well as possible. I promise to do my best with so much uncertainty going on. Until we know more, we plan to work March 23-27 as planned until told otherwise.

The Band Booster meeting scheduled for this Monday the 16th has been bumped to Monday the 23rd. This may have to change again, so please be flexible. PreUIL and the Chamber/Percussion concert are still on schedule, but may have to change as we get more information from the district.

Please continue to ask questions and check in with our Google Calendar regularly. I'll do what I can to answer relatively quickly and keep the caldenar up to date.

Thanks,

Matt

Good morning Band,

This was a productive week and will certainly pay off down the road. We’ve developed topics like an overnight trip next year, a new composition for the end of this year, and the prospect of new uniforms next marching season.

Overnight Trip

I submitted an approval packet this week for a two-night trip to New Orleans next year. This one is in extra early so we know it’s approved before getting momentum behind fundraising and travelers. If approved, we would travel April 9-11. We will NOT, under any circumstances, be visiting Bourbon Street.

New Composition

We contact composer William Owens in August of 2018 to see if he could write a piece of music to commemorate May 18th. He accepted and said he couldn’t start writing until now. He’s started writing and knows how important a piece like this is. Willie says he’s been “pouring his heart into this one” and hopes the results work out. We’ll premiere this composition at our spring concert.

New Uniforms

We have the chance to get new uniforms next year, but need to vote on it at the Band Booster meeting on March 16th. This is a very exciting subject, but also an expensive one. If you attend that meeting, please make sure to listen to all sides of the financial discussion before deciding how you want to vote. If approved, it moves on to the School Board with a strong chance of having them for next marching season.

Whew. I don’t know if there will be more before Spring Break, but keep your eyes peeled for more news. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Thanks,

Matt

Wednesday 26, 2020

Good afternoon Band,

Just a few announcements as Spring Break approaches:

Please remember that Concert Attire Forms and money are due this Friday. This allows us to get the orders in and have the attire by our April 2 PreUIL performance.

Students are able to make up any objective before the nine weeks is over. If a student needs to make up any grades, there's still time.

Concert Band will not be having any rehearsals until after Spring Break. At that time, we will begin working from 3:15-5:00 Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school. Please plan accordingly.

Thanks,

Matt

Good afternoon Band,

Solo & Ensemble is this coming Saturday and we now have a working schedule on the Google Calendar. Doors open at 11:00 with a 11:45 depart. We'll return a little after 5:00 if everything goes according to schedule. Parents are welcome to attend the performances at Clear Lake High School.

We are in need of a truck driver and at least two chaperones. If you are available, please let me know.

Thanks everyone,

Matt

Good afternoon Band,

Florida refunds are ready at the bookkeeper's office, but a parent or guardian has to pick up the money. Mrs. Walton will not give refunds to students in this case.

Please visit and join the Band Booster Facebook page. Follow this group to see how you can support the band and keep up with the changes within the organization.

We've been in touch with the matte designer and photographer from last year and have good news. The photographer is willing to come back for a reshoot and will honor any receipts you have from NATP for no extra cost. The matte designer has also agreed to sell us a full composite photo for a very low fee. Both gentlemen are also upset at how NATP went out of business and want to make as much of this right as they can.

Seniors, we are looking for a good baby picture for the banquet. Please submit both a baby picture and a senior picture to the Facebook page or Cameron McCollum as soon as you can. Also, it looks like you have the opportunity to purchase your senior posters from marching season through the band boosters for $25.00. Please let me know if you're interested.
