MS. ELTGROTH - ROOM 221 - ELA
Hello! I've missed you!!!
Monday, March 23, 2020
Welcome to our new classroom! I hope you're all doing okay. I know this is a crazy time and we're going to get through this together.
You might be worried about how online learning is going to work. Don't panic! Instruction won't be much different than what we usually do in class because we use the Readers and Writers Workshop. Instead of writing things in your journal, you'll write (post) them here on Canvas. You have used Canvas before so this is not a new format for you. I'm confident you'll find your groove and your successes!
I will be posting assignments each week here on Canvas that you will need to complete by that Friday at 3 pm. The assignments will guide you through what you need to know and what you need to do. Each week will also include an assigned Independent Reading passage and reflection question.
To help when you have questions or get stuck, you can email or chat here with me every school day. I'll be available in the mornings from 10-11 and in the afternoons from 2-3. You can email me outside of those times, but I may not be able to answer you immediately.
Late work will lose points per day just as if we were at school. If you are sick, please let me know so that you have the benefit of one extra day per sick day to complete your assignments with no penalty.
Bored? Explore the world from your comfy spot at home! To keep your reading skills strong and growing, feel free to use our school library to find some digital texts to read on your own or check out the following sites with free-ebooks:
I'm excited about this new chapter in our learning and I know we will accomplish good things! So let's get started!

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!
I hope you had a great summer and are FIRED UP for 8th grade ELA! I am excited about all that lies ahead on our journey this year - lots and lots of learning! This year we will dive into READERS-WRITERS workshop. We will explore, discuss, dissect, reflect, respond, question, and create while reading and writing. Classes will include a variety of texts, a combination of old school pencil/paper and new world technology, and different ways of interacting with content and with each other. Students will be choosing their own texts from our classroom library based on individual interests, reading level, and content. Please click above for the Intellectual Freedom Self-Censorship Statement.
I expect students to come to class ready to learn and ready to contribute positively to our classroom community. The best tool in your toolbox is an "I CAN" attitude. Some things will be easier for you and some things will be more difficult. When you hit a tough spot, KEEP GOING! From confusion and struggle, come knowledge and self-confidence. Together we will challenge and conquer, and you will succeed.
This year marks my 21st year of teaching and my 7th here at Santa Fe Junior High. I have Bachelor's in Secondary English Education and a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction. Junior high captured my heart on day one of my pre-student teaching experience and I can't imagine any other grade level being as exciting and rewarding.
I believe communication is key to building and maintaining our partnership. Please take full advantage of the information available on my website and via Skyward. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Email is the best, quickest way to reach me.
Get ready for a FANTASTIC year!!!
