Course Description

 

Precalculus. Topics include elementary theory of functions and equations, analytic geometry, vectors, introductory logic,

mathematical induction, sequences and finite series.

 

Prerequisites

Algebra II or Departmental approval

 

Course Goal

This course is intended primarily to prepare students for calculus. It can also be used for general mathematics credit.

 

Course Student Learning Outcomes (SLO):

  1. 1. Represent and manipulate algebraic and trigonometric functions and relations algebraically, graphically, and numerically, including

partial fraction decomposition and finding zeroes of functions.

  1. 2. Engage in algebraic and trigonometric problem solving and modeling.
  2. 3. Synthesize algebraic and trigonometric facts and laws into proof
  3. 4. Analyze and manipulate equations between various two-dimensional systems such as rectangular, polar, vector representation s, conic systems and axes manipulations, as well as solving equations in these system
  4. 5. Investigate and perform summations and predictions on geometric, algebraic and binomial sequences and series

 

Learning outcomes

Students will:

1.1 Develop and use various problem-solving techniques.

1.2 Recognize functions as ordered pairs.

1.3 Determine the graph of an algebraic equation or function.

1.4 Understand synthetic division.

1.5 Develop partial fraction decomposition.

1.6 Find the zeros of real functions

1.7 Solve polynomial equations.

1.8 Utilize the six basic trigonometric functions.

2.1 Apply the Law of sines and the Law of cosines for various types of situations.

3.1 Verify various trigonometric identities.

3.2 Find the powers and roots of complex numbers using DeMoivre’s Theorem.

4.1 Understand basic vectors (2 dimensional).

4.2 Convert points in a rectangular coordinate system to polar coordinates.

4.3 Recognize algebraic formulas relating to circles, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas.

4.4 Use translation of axes, rotation of axes, and polar equations of conics

5.1 Recognize the use of arithmetic and geometric sequences.

5.2 Use summation notation to represent a series.

5.3 Understand and use the Binomial theorem.

5.4 Understand mathematical induction.

5.5 Understand the basic concepts of limits.

 

 

General Classroom Behavior

  • You are expected to respect and value yourself, your school environment and the diversity of the SFHS community.
  • You are expected to contribute to classes and work cooperatively whenever the situation requires.
  • You are expected to come to class prepared and you are responsible for all missing work
  • Cell phones must be put away during instruction. Students are allowed two warnings before the phone is sent to the office with a $15.00 retrieval fee, per school policy.

 *Consequences for not adhering to the class rules can include a warning, student/teacher conference, parent/student/teacher conference, and/or a written referral and conference with an assistant principal.

  • Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
  • Sequences, Series, and Binomial Expansion

Pascal’s Triangle Project 

 

Nine Weeks 3

 

  • Problem Solving With Trigonometric Ratios
  • Trigonometric Functions
  • Trigonometric Equations and Identities

 

Nine Weeks 4

 

  • Vectors
  • Parametric Equations
  • Polar Equations
  • Conics
  • Limits

 

 

 

 

Tutorials

For many students, tutorials are an integral part to being successful in Pre-Calculus. Tutoring is available after school Monday and Wednesday until 3:30 and on advisory travel days. Additional tutoring can be arranged by appointment.

Homework and Retakes

Students will likely be assigned homework daily. Several consecutive days of assignments will be collected together on the due date at the beginning of class.

Retake tests are offered to students who make below a 70 on their exam. The student must come in for tutorials and correct the failed exam, and then they will be eligible for a retake with a maximum grade of 70. The retake must be taken within 1 week of the original exam being passed back to students.

Late Work Policy

If a student is present the day work is assigned and is present the day it is due and fails to turn in the work, no credit is given.

If a student is present the day work is assigned and is absent the day it is due, the work is due the day that student returns.

If a student is absent the day work is assigned, they have one day from when they return to turn in the missed work.

Grading Policy

Santa Fe ISD grading policy states major grades must count 50% and daily grades are to count 20%. Major grades consist of tests and projects. Daily grades consist of homework and classwork. Quizzes are 30%. There will be a minimum of three major grades and eight daily grades per nine weeks. Students are encouraged but not required to purchase a graphing calculator. If you purchase your own, I recommend TI-83+, TI-84+, TI-Nspire, or TI-Nspire CX.
