Course Description and Grading Procedures

Credit: 1 Fine Art

Prerequisites: ART 1

Grade Level: 9-12

This syllabus is subject to change by the instructor when conditions warrant.

Instructor: Mr. Matthew Knickerbocker

Course Description: Drawing II; Previous course in Drawing sequence for Drawing III & IV, or instructor approval. These courses are designed for students who wish to specialize in drawing. Various drawing media and techniques will be explored. Students will study art appreciation, art history, and art criticism with more in-depth coverage of drawing as a specialized area. Two written papers may be required in each course.


DRAW II Fee: $50 covers DRAW II supplies that are used in the classroom on a regular basis.

Fees are used to help cover the cost of drawing pencils, drawing paper, colored pencils, watercolor, tempera & acrylic paints, erasers, hand held sharpeners, scissors, rulers, paint brushes, glue, oil & chalk pastels, yarn, markers, & sharpies.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the course fee, please contact me as soon as possible.

Please pay fees to the bookkeeper in the front office during the first week of school. Students that fail to submit their $50.00 Course Fee may be put on a fine list until the fee has been paid. Fees may be paid via cash, check, or money order made out to SFHS-ART. Please obtain a receipt, and keep it for the duration of the course.

Grading Procedures

90-100= A, 80-89= B, 75-79= C, 70-74= D, 0-69= F

Alternative Assessment/Daily work= 20%

Quizzes/Portfolio= 30%

Exams/Projects= 50%

Alternative Assessment/ Daily Work: Participation/clean-up grades are taken randomly. This includes book work, vocabulary, and worksheets that are done in one day’s time. If a student refuses to participate in class or clean-up, they will receive a 0 for their Daily Grade.

Quizzes/Portfolio: Quizzes are given periodically to check for understanding of a new technique or vocabulary. Portfolio assignments are given as homework unless otherwise stated. 

Exams/Projects: Projects are graded on basis of craftsmanship, design, and class time spent on projects. Students are given approximately 1-3 weeks to complete projects depending on availability.

The students may be expected to complete a written RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT. This is graded as project. The research assignment will be accompanied by a project based on the research assignment, which is also graded as a project.

Students’ work is graded on basis of design, creativity, craftsmanship, completion, individual effort, and use of class time. Average amount of homework is an hour a week.

Late Work/Incomplete Policy: It is very important in DRAW II for projects to be finished in a timely manner, that is why my Late Work/Incomplete Policy for DRAW II is a little different from the district standard. All Late Work will receive a minimum 15-point deduction, where the maximum a student can earn for a late assignment will be an 85. All Incomplete Work will receive a minimum of a 25-pont deduction, where the maximum a student can earn will be a 75.

I understand that unforeseen things happen. In the event where the unforeseen happens, it is up to the student to be proactive and come and tell me what is going on so I can work with them to avoid any late or incomplete penalty.

Classroom Discipline

1st- Verbal Warning & Redirect

2nd- Teacher/Student Conference

3rd- Teacher Detention & Parent/Guardian Contact

4th- Teacher/Student/Parent or Guardian Conference



Tardy Policy

I follow SFHS tardy policy. All doors will be shut at the time of the bell and the student will have to obtain a tardy slip for entrance into class. 

10 Minute Rule

No student will be permitted to leave the classroom for any reason 10 minutes after class begins.

Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones are NOT to be used during DRAW II unless specified by me at the beginning of the class. All cell phones are to remain in the cell phone caddy by the door, in the charging station, or in students’ backpacks during class. I also require students to relinquish their cell phones before leaving the class to use the restroom.

Students who violate cell phone policy will have their cell phones confiscated for the remainder of class. Repeated cell phone violations will result in the cell phone being sent to the bookkeeper who will hold it until a $15.00 fine is paid.
