 Can I be in band if I don’t know how to play an instrument?

• YES! YES! YES! You don’t need to know anything.
• We will explain everything from the beginning. You will be surprised how quickly you can learn.

 When will I pick out the instrument I want to play?

• Students will meet with one of our Santa Fe band directors at a scheduled time to try instruments.
• We will decide together on the best instrument for each student based on student interest and physical attributes such as hand size, arm length, lips, teeth, and other important characteristics.

 Are band instruments expensive?

• Students can rent an instrument from the music store with no long-term risk.
• Rentals can be returned at any time. There are no early cancellation fees.

What if we can not afford an instrument?

• French Horn, Baritone & Tuba are automatically school-owned instruments. Only supplies will need to be purchased.
• If renting one of the other instruments is too expensive, there are some school-owned instruments provided on a case-by-case basis by the Band Boosters (parent support organization) that can be checked out just like a library book. The Band Booster organization runs the concession stands at football games and does many other events throughout the year to earn money to support the needs of the band. Assisting the Band Boosters will go a long way to help them provide these instruments for the band.

When will students need their instrument/supplies?

• Students will need their instrument and all supplies by August 28, 2023.
• On the first days of school, students will learn about reading music. We will start with instruments after that.

Can I be in Athletics and Band?

• YES! YES! YES! Students only go to band during the school day. More than half of the band students are also involved in sports, robotics, student council, youth groups, etc.

 Is there after-school practice in the 6th-grade Band?

• No, beginning band students only attend band during the day. There are no regular after-school practices.

What instruments can I choose to play in the band?

• Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone,
• Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, and Percussion.
