Art 1, Art 2, Advanced Art

Course Description: A year course designed to instruct beginning, intermediate, and advanced art students in a variety of art medias. Students will become familiar with the Elements of Art and Principles of design while completing a variety of assigned projects and experimenting with different media and processes.

Course Goals:

  • Learn and develop technical skills in various artistic mediums.
  • Ability to utilize visual communication as a means of self-expression.
  • Develop rendering and compositional skills in more mature synthesis of elements.
  • Incorporate research and written personal reflection into projects.
  • Develop a beginner ability to analyze and speak about art.

Required Materials:

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Laptop
  • Sketchbook (able to fit into backpack)

Course Expectations: Students are responsible for in-class studio work, participation during in-class activities, studio preparation, clean-up, and weekly sketchbook assignments.  Students are expected to come to class on time and be prepared for every class.  Students are expected to plan artwork, put forth good effort in creating that work, manage their studio/working time appropriately, complete the assignment, and turn assignment in on time.  Students are expected to do their own work, unless working on a group activity, and are responsible for adherence to copyright laws and SFISD Policy.

  • Students will attend class on time per their class schedule.
  • Students should participate responsibly. Raise your hand to speak.
  • Students should begin each class ready to engage and learn.
  • Students need a designated, distraction-free workspace to engage in learning.
  • Students will participate in class activities, discussions and assignments.
  • Students will follow the SFISD Student Code of Conduct and dress code guidelines.Classroom Procedures: The amount of time you will have to complete each project is planned to coincide with the amount of class time given before the due date.  You should have enough studio time to complete each project in class.  The following is our usual class routine.

Classroom Rules: It should be everyone’s goal to see that each student can work in an environment that is free of any disruptive or negative behaviors and attitudes.  Failure to work together toward this goal will not be tolerated.  There is always cleaning that is necessary and all students are expected to participate in the cleaning process for at least the last five minutes of class.  Disciplinary actions will be taken for excessive messes, refusal to clean up, or disruptive or negative behavior occurs.  If needed, administration and parents will be notified.

  • Do not leave the classroom for any reason without permission.
  • Respect all people, projects, materials and the studio.
  • Act in a mature and responsible way. No horseplay or swearing.
  • Come to class prepared, pay attention, follow directions and stay on task.
  • Food and drink are not permitted in class.
  • No cell phones in class. Turn it off!  If it is seen or heard it will be confiscated.
  • Discrimination or any hateful/negative language or actions will not be tolerated. This pertains, but is not limited, to gender, race, sexual orientation, political views, religion, remarks about intelligence, appearance, disability, learning styles, or artistic ability.

RESPECT the teacher. This includes subs.

Respect your peers.

Use all materials properly.

Stay positive.

Attendance: As Art is a studio course, attendance is crucial to success in this class.  Excessive tardiness or absences can negatively affect academic grade.  This is an activity-based course; lack of presence in class directly impacts understanding of course content as well as quality of artwork.  If you know in advance that you will be missing class, it is the student’s responsibility to be aware of and get coursework in advance.

Absences: Students are responsible for making up missing work outside of class time.  If time after school is needed, please make plans with the teacher to stay after school.  Do not assume the teacher can stay after the same day the student is asking.

Grading Policy: The grade for this course is based on studio projects, daily work, participation, and sketchbook work.  Studio projects are graded according to rubrics that include areas of assessment such as effort, demonstrated knowledge of concept, classroom work habits, and composition.  Late assignments will be marked down 10 points for every day that they are late. Your overall grade is calculated on the following scale:

60% Major Grade - Studio Projects

40% Daily Grade - Class Participation, Daily Work, Sketchbook

Late work will be accepted unless the assignment states otherwise.

Every day that you do not turn in an assignment 10 points will be taken off daily (not including weekend).

I grade on a 4-point scale: 4= 90%-100%   3= 80%-89%   2= 70%-79%   1= 50%-69%

I will not give a student a “0” if he/she refuses to work. In order to grade work, the work must exist. Instead, this student will earn an “MI” (missing).

Academic Integrity: Students are expected to do their own work, unless working on a group activity, and are responsible for adherence to copyright laws and the Santa Fe ISD Academic Honesty Policy.  Reference images may be used, but students should be dependent upon their own reference images when at all possible.  Any appropriation of published or photographic sources or the work of other artists must demonstrate the student’s artistic voice through discernible manipulation to express the student’s individual ideas.  No credit will be given for work that violates this policy.
