6th Grade English Language Arts Syllabus
Welcome to my class! During this school year, we will be working to master the Texas English Language Arts and Reading TEKS. We will also be working hard on word study and vocabulary. Even though we will make time in class every day for independent reading and/or writing, continuing at home is vital to success in this class. We will be using the beanstack app to track our reading throughout the year. Each week, students in ELA will need to track 100 minutes of reading in the app, while students in Advanced ELA (2nd period) will need to track 150 minutes. This reading is homework and will need to be completed outside of class time.
Classroom Library:
Students will be allowed and encouraged to check out books from our classroom library. I will use the booksource app to check books out to students. By signing this agreement, you ensure your student will return all borrowed books. If the books are not returned, you agree to replace the book or pay for a replacement copy, as the classroom library is an extension of the school library.
Class Rules:
- Be prompt: be in class each day; be in your seat
when the bell rings.
- Be prepared: bring your materials to class each day.
- Be polite: everyone gets the same opportunity to
learn, share, and participate.
- Be positive: express yourself, have fun, be
enthusiastic, encourage others.
- Be productive: complete all assignments and
homework on time.
Classroom policies- School policies are available in student handbook
Make-Up Work:
-"Students are responsible for discussing with their teacher any assignments missed due to their absence upon their return to class."
There will be an absence folder in the classroom containing the assignments from the current week. Anything
previous will need to be discussed with Ms. Evans.
-"Make-up work will be completed outside of class time or at the teacher’s discretion."
-"The number of days allowed for make-up work to be completed will be equal to the number of times a class was missed."
If extra time is needed, the student should discuss the matter with Ms. Evans prior to the due date.
-"Make-up work often requires the student to attend tutorials to receive detailed instructions or assistance."
Tutorials are every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:05-3:45. If alternate times are needed, please discuss with
Ms. Evans in advance.
Late Work:
"Assignments are due on time. The late work point deduction is listed below:
1 day late = 10 point deduction
2 days late = 15 point deduction
3 days late = 20 point deduction
4 days late = 25 point deduction
5 days late = 30 point deduction"
Ms. Evans will accept late work until the last Friday of the 3-week grading period in which it was assigned with a
deduction of 30-50 points at teacher discretion.
If the missing/late work is not completed by that day, the grade will remain a zero in the gradebook.
How are grades weighted?
