SF Jr. High Dance

Welcome to DANCE!!! My name is Holly Davenport and I will be your dance teacher for the 2023-2024 school year.  This will be my 21st year teaching and my 14th year in Santa Fe.  I am excited to meet you all and I hope you and your families are doing well.  I know we will have a great year and I look forward to getting to know each of you!

Please read through the syllabus and email me with any questions.  Remember, time management is key! Make a daily/weekly schedule with all of your assignments and take it one step at a time. All of your teachers are here for you, so don’t hesitate to contact us.

Course Objectives:

  • To develop technique skills in dance.
  • To introduce students to various genres of dance.
  • To achieve proper dance alignment and balance.
  • To instill an appreciation of dance and movement based performances.

Dance Class Guidelines:

  • Students will get dressed within 7-10 minutes.  After 10 minutes, grade deductions will be enforced. 
  • Students should observe and perform the combinations that are shown to the best of their ability daily. 
  • No side conversations are allowed during instruction. This will result in a deduction in the student’s conduct or grade.
  • Food, drinks and gum are not allowed anywhere in the dance locker rooms and studio!
  • Students must raise their hand if they have a comment or question.
  • Students must obtain permission from the teacher before leaving any dance class.
  • Students are to use the restroom before and after class only, unless it is an emergency.
  • Students must keep hands, feet and other objects to themselves.
  • Students may not use the dance class time for academic homework.
  • Please discuss concerns with Mrs. Davenport privately and calmly.

Dance Locker Room Guidelines:

  • All personal items must be kept with the student throughout the day.  No lockers or cubbies will be issued.
  • Locker/dressing rooms are only for students dressing out for class.  Dressing for class will be done in small groups.
  • NO food or drinks are allowed in the locker/dressing rooms.
  • NO CELL PHONES are allowed in locker/dressing rooms.
  • All students must keep their hands to themselves. No verbal or physical fighting will be tolerated.Dance shoes can be purchased at:

**Violations of these procedures may result in disciplinary consequences/office referrals.  Student may lose dressing room privileges and may be assigned alternative assignments.

Grading Policies:

  • 100% Daily Participation, Written Tests, Skills Tests, Projects and Dressing Out

Weekly Grades: You will receive two or three grades weekly.

  • Participation
  • Dressing Out
  • Tests

You will receive 20 points per day of class, which equals 100 points for the week.  Points will be deducted for the following reasons:

  • No t-shirt or workout pants = 10 points each
  • Wearing big jewelry = 5 points
  • Not dressing out in proper attire on time/tardy = 5 points
  • Not participating, demonstrating movements, or sitting out = 20 points

Dressing Out:

  • Students are expected to dress out daily in appropriate clothing, unless otherwise instructed. These points may not be made up. If you forget your clothes, you are still required to participate.   
  • Each student must have dance attire by August 28th.

Dance Supplies:

  • 1 Composition notebook or folder with paper.
  • ANY color t-shirt or Spirit t-shirt (black is preferred)
  • ANY color workout leggings, jazz pants, or sweatpants (black is preferred)
  • Shoe are optional.  Shoe options (only one) -Black or tan jazz shoes, ballet shoes, foot undeez, tennis shoes or bare foot
  • Hair bands
  • Small dance bag (with name written in it)
  • Name on everything!!!
  • $15.00 T-shirt Fee- MANATORY T-shirt fee will be only for those students performing in the Tribal Belles Spring Show.  More information will be sent home in January 2024.
