Below are the 50 SFISD tested high frequency words. Your child is expected to be able to read these words before going on to 1^st grade. Your child will also have exposure words taught each nine weeks. Your child will not be tested on these words for their report card, but it is important that they learn to read these words before 1^st grade. High frequency words are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognize these words in print within three seconds without having to use any strategies to decode.  

In order to keep my students challenged every students has a word list packet in their HERO binder along with a sight word folder. The sight word folder will house your child's flash cards for the list they are currently on.  They will also have a list at school in their reading folder.  This packet is made up of 11 word lists, with about 20 words per list. It is highly recommended that your child practice reading their word list to you nightly.  Your child will be given opportunities during the school week to read their list to me.  If a student can read through the list with no more than 2 mistakes and can read the words fluently (can automatically recognize these words within three seconds without having to use any strategies to decode) they will move onto the next list. Feel free to practice more than one list if your child is ready to move on, but hasn't had the opportunity to read to me yet.  The first 3 list contain the 50 sight words that SFISD requires your child to know by first grade.  The rest of the list are made up of challenge words.
