The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

Seussical is fun for the whole family! Performers of all ages will be excited to portray the characters from the familiar Dr. Seuss fables.

Characters

The Cat In The Hat
The essence of mischief, fun and imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping JoJo to discover the power of his imagination as they create the story for the show together. Look for a physically adept actor (male or female) to play the Cat, one who will be able to play many comic cameos (Dr. Dake, helicopter reporter, TV interviewer, auctioneer, Mr. McGurkus, etc.) and is comfortable improvising with an audience.

Jojo/the Boy
Jojo is a "Thinker"--a smart child with a wild imagination. He can be played as being a little bit awkward, a little bit of a loner, or simply a rambunctious kid whose 'Thinks' get him into constant trouble. By the end of the show, he learns what it means to be a responsible member of his world, using the power and possibilities of his own 'Thinks.' Can Be Played by male or female, JH or HS

Horton The Elephant
Gentle, rotund and appealing. Think of him as a big-hearted blue collar guy who is steadfast and responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is imaginative and receptive to the world around him. He is very un-self-conscious. Horton's view of the world never changes--he believes in its goodness. But by the end of the show, without even realizing it, he is ready to become a parent.

Gertrude Mcfuzz
Very self-conscious and aware that her one-feather tail isn't perfect. Gertrude changes during the show from a vain, neurotic, nervous and shy bird into one with the power to protect and care for all.

Vocal range bottom: F3
Mayzie Labird
Self-centered, selfish and vain, Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates anyone she can (especially Horton) into doing what she wants. But Mayzie isn't all bad.
Vocal range top: Eb5
Vocal range bottom: G3
Sour Kangaroo
She isn't really sour at all. She's just got a lot of attitude. She's loud, brassy and a lot of fun. Has a baby kangaroo that can be played by a JH or ELM student.

Vocal range bottom: F#3
The Wickersham Brothers
These are not bad guys! They're simply a lot like kids who tease, play pranks and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at others' expense. They enjoy hanging around with one another, making music together on the street corner, and playing off one another. Very agile, athletics, acrobatic. Think Jungle Mobsters.
The Whos
They're a lot like you and me only so small as to be invisible. Every Who will create his or her own, unique character.
Jungle Creatures
Fun animal inspired character's that live in the Jungle of Nool.
The Bird Girls
They are like the popular girls in any school--a clique of self-centered "back up birds" who do whatever Mayzie does.
Mr. Mayor
Mr. and Mrs. Mayor are parents trying hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love him dearly and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake.

Vocal range bottom: D3
Mrs. Mayor
Mr. and Mrs. Mayor are parents trying hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love him dearly and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake.

Musical FAQ's

Does my student have to attend both days of auditions to be considered for a part?

No! Those who are auditioning only need to come one day, and can leave once they are finished. Lines can get long, and it takes time to get everyone evaluated fairly. You are welcome to wait with them in the lobby of the auditorium.

Can I go in and watch my child/friend audition?

No! Due to confidentiality of other students, auditions are closed to anyone outside of that audition group. We will bring in groups of 5 students to evaluate them on stage.

My child doesn't get out of school until 4, can they still participate?

Yes! We understand that by including elementary students, that some rehearsals may have to start later in order for them to get there. JH/HS students may still have rehearsals starting when they get out of school, but we will wait for elementary to get our before we begin any songs/ dances that they are in.

When will the cast list be posted?

November 4th at 10am on the Musical Website!

How will elementary be included this year?

Students in grades 3-5 are welcome to audition, and will be included in the full show. Due to the nature of the story, we are able to include them in more, similar to when we did Wizard of Oz. They will NOT be in a pre-show performance, and will be needed for every performance.

Will there be call backs for leads?

Call backs will be notified Tuesday by 7pm and will be from 3-5pm on Wednesday November 2nd in the Auditorium.

How often will my student have rehearsals?

As we get closer to the actual performances, we will have them every day. However, starting out we will have them broken up into vocal and choreography rehearsals. There will also be specific songs on specific days. HS/JH will rehearse about 3-4 days a week and elementary will rehearse about twice a week. Please mark all conflicts on the calendar and turn into the directors so we can plan accordingly.
