My name is Susan Bledsoe. I have been teaching ASL here at SFHS for 21 years. I have a Bachelor's and 2 Master's degrees from Lamar University.

My family has lived in Santa Fe for 27 years.  Both of my children are SFHS alumni (2006 and 2010).

I am looking forward to working with my students this year.

Students will be using Flipgrid to record their signing.  This app, used through Canvas, is a powerful tool that allows students to record themselves signing based on a prompt shown in class.  It is a wonderful way to allow me to evaluate a student's signing without taking up large amounts of class time in order to sign one-on-one with students.  I can give them video feedback to help correct errors and encourage their use of the target language.

Some student assignments will also be shared to the class 'grid' which will allow students to respond to each other in the target language.

Another tool that will be used is the video function in Canvas.  This does not allow students to view each other's work, but does submit directly to me for evaluation and feedback.

Video Chat Protocol

The following are expectations of behavior during video chat (conferencing).

  • Test your tech. Log-on early to make sure that your camera and microphone are working.
  • Look nice. You don't have to be dressed up, but don't be in your pajamas...and comb your hair.
  • Background. Make sure that your background is appropriate. I don't want to see your messy bed in the background...I see enough of that at my house. Make sure that there is not a bright light behind you.
  • Turn your camera on. It is polite to turn your camera on.  If you do not have a camera, still join in but let us know that you don't have a camera.
  • Look in the lens. Looking in the camera lens is the same as looking people in the eye.
  • Limit distractions. Find a place where the family and/or pets are not going to be distracting you from your time on-line.  I know that sometimes things happen, but try to limit it as much as possible.
  • Take turns. Don't talk over each other. Be polite and take turns.
  • Disconnect.  When the call is over, make sure that you disconnect. That way you are not accidentally sharing what is happening at your house after the chat is over.
